Remove sticker adhesive without using harsh chemicals

Glass packaging is making a comeback. It is better for the environment and has health and taste benefits compared to plastic packaging.

Facts from the Glass Packaging Institute

  • Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity.
  • 80% of recovered glass is made into new glass products.
  • A glass container can go from a recycling bin to a store shelf in as little as 30 days.
  • Glass is nonporous and impermeable, so there are no interactions between glass packaging and products to affect the flavour of food and beverages.
  • Glass has an almost zero rate of chemical interactions, ensuring that the products inside a glass bottle keep their strength, aroma, and flavour.

But the adhesive used to label the jars leaves a nasty residue behind.

Use peanut butter to remove the sticker residue off glass and plastic! The oils break down the glue in the adhesive.

First, remove as much of the sticker as possible.

Then rub peanut butter on the residue. Allow it to sit a few minutes.

Spray the area with a dish soap solution – my favourite all-purpose cleaner. I keep a bottle under my kitchen sink for tasks just like this.

Now rinse the peanut butter off with hot water.

That’s it! Now your jars are ready to reuse.

If you’re allergic to peanut butter, vegetable oil works too.
