During a recent cold snap I made an interesting discovery about the efficiency of our window coverings. Here’s what I found.
In the winter, I keep the window blinds closed in rooms we are not using to add an extra layer between the warm inside and the cold outside. This helps with our home’s efficiency.
After a night of extreme cold, I made an interesting discovery.
The windows with sunshades were completely covered with a layer of ice.
The windows with slat blinds had ice along the bottoms but were mostly covered with condensation.
So, the sunshades must do a better job of keeping the warm air in and the cold air out and are therefore more efficient. This might be something to consider next time you’re shopping for window coverings.
And if the windows get frosty like this in your home, go around and dry them off when they melt. This will prevent mildew from forming on them.
I also lay a towel along the bottom of the windows to catch the moisture as it thaws.
