Happy Pancake Day (Mardi Gras)

Are you having pancakes for supper tonight? I am!

As a kid, we would sometimes have pancakes for supper. I, of course, thought it was awesome! But I never thought other people did that, or that there’s an actual pancake day when pancakes for supper is kind of a thing.

Then I started working at a nursing home in the Maritimes where there is a large Catholic population. On certain days, such as Shrove Tuesday, the residents would get pancakes for supper. Fun!

Here is my family’s favourite pancake recipe.

Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). Shrove Tuesday. Pancake Day. Whatever you call it, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is a day of feasting because many people give up high calorie foods during Lent, the 40 days before Easter. Lent is a Christian tradition of sacrifice as people consider the ultimate sacrifice Christ made for them on the cross.

Here is more information on why we celebrate Mardi Gras.

I think that I may say that an American has not seen the United States until he has seen Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
