Hermit Cookies

1 Electric mixer
2 cookie sheets
- 1 cup Raisins
- Water
- 1 ¾ cup All-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Baking soda
- 1 tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp Allspice
- 1/8 tsp Ground nutmeg
- ½ cup Shortening
- 1 cup Brown sugar lightly packed
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1 cup Chopped nuts
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Place raisins in a small saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then turn off the heat and let them sit while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
In a medium mixing bowl, blend dry ingredients together.
In a second bowl, cream shortening and brown sugar until smooth.
Beat in eggs, one at a time.
Mix in vanilla.
Stir in the flour mixture.
Drain raisins well.
Add raisins and nuts to the cookie dough and stir.
Cover and chill the dough in the refrigerator for an hour.
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a baking sheet.
Bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
